Almost thirteen years ago, Daniel was in a kindergarten classroom, but couldn’t understand the words being spoken all around him. He spent his next several school years working through the ESL program. Partly because of his own efforts to learn to read, Daniel’s desire to give back to the community is now benefitting other young students. To celebrate his graduation this May from Ogden High School, Daniel has organized a fundraiser with Javier’s restaurants: 10% of the proceeds from meals on Graduation Day (Wednesday, May 23) will be donated to the Read.Graduate.Succeed. tutoring program. (Diners must mention the fundraiser to participate.)
As a high school student, Daniel has been busy studying and participating in several clubs, including debate, Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA), and Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). As he has considered career goals, he said he realized “I always wanted to work to help others, but I knew that I would be more successful doing it if I looked for it as a career rather than just as a volunteer.” This idea led him to United Way of Northern Utah, where he arranged an internship for his final semester of high school.
In addition to learning about how a nonprofit works, Daniel was able to join United Way representatives at the Capitol during the Utah Legislature’s 2017 session. The highlight of the day was the opportunity to meet several lawmakers while learning about the legislative process.
Daniel was able to put his nonprofit skills to good use as he organized the Graduation Day fundraiser at Javier’s. He felt like Read.Graduate.Succeed. was a good program to help “because I’ve seen other people, as well as myself, struggle with reading, being such a necessary thing in school. Reading is a critical skill, and he said the program is “something I see truly helping future graduates.”
Congratulations, Daniel! We wish you the best of luck at Weber State University next year and in all your pursuits. Thank you for choosing to Live United!
