"There is something about...."
Merille Boyack recently spoke at the Commission on Volunteers, conference on volunteerism in Provo, Utah. Her enthusiam for helping others was contagious and I left inspired to do more and be better about it. My favorite quote from her is "There is something about Merilee Boyack you need to know - I am fearless in asking for help for others."
Those lines made me feel so much more confident and comfortable in my work. I should be fearless in asking for help for others. There is no harm and nothing awkward about advocating for others by asking for help for them.
The other insight I left with was her apple metaphor. Sometimes in our ask or request, we seek after an apple. "If we can just get that apple," we think, "then we can finally feed someone." She went on to invite us to go after apple trees. Even, plant apple trees. With this method, we can feed generations!
