Risk & RFP's

Apr 2, 2008

Community Impact RFP's are finally available online.  And applications are now open to the Northern Utah community to apply for funding.

This has been a long and complicated road. We started this process about two years ago (formally, anyway). As we moved quickly towards making this change we had many folks voice concern. Would this cut off critical funding to small agencies that needed it most? Would donors back away from United Way because our focus was so narrow? And… my favorite was from our sister United Way in Salt Lake warning us to not to go too fast. (It took them 5 years to implement this change).

Well, we learned a few things along the road to community impact:
  1. Our Agencies are truly partners and not only work with us well but also work well with each other. In our neck of the woods collaboration is NOT a dirty word!
  2. Everyone was ready for the change and although many of the “Big Dog” agencies had concerns on funding cuts, in the long run everyone could see the benefits of going into a completive funding process.
  3. A three year funding cycle and an easy to construct grant formula was again another welcome piece to this new change.
  4. The most important thing I personally learned was that if you follow your heart and make decisions with a clear and pure look at what is the right thing to do, you’ll succeed.

There is risk in this new process and we determined that doing nothing far out weighted the risks.
